Marie Bukowski: New Work

With an extensive international résumé that includes exhibitions in European capitals, it may come as a surprise that painter and printmaker Marie Bukowski is based in Ruston, where she teaches art at Louisiana Tech. Her paintings and monotypes employ a number of universally recognizable forms ranging from umbrellas, birdcages and locks to safety pins, cocoons and hatboxes in a visual vocabulary replete with surreal twists of the sort seen in Parachute 12 (pictured), in which a parachute looks suspiciously like a bird cage. Bukowski was one of many artists brought to local attention by the late gallerist Cole Pratt, whose tireless support of this city's art community is commemorated in the New Orleans Museum of Art's special exhibition, A Tribute to Cole Pratt, on view through Sept. 21. — D.
