Re: “Preserving the Louisiana heritage strawberry

My grandparents, the Orlando and Salamone families, grew Klondyke Strawberries in Independence, LA many years ago for the New Orleans area markets. I can still remember my Grandpa Orlando's strawberry wine that he would made and gave sparingly to us grandkids because we begged for a taste. The strawberries were unforgettable in their wonderful flavor. No other strawberry I have ever tasted can compare with that flavor I remembered as a child. I understand todays farmer wanting a bigger, more colorful and lasting berry, but the flavor is just not there. Progress is a good thing, but not necessarily the best thing.
