Meat Puppets

Arizona's Meat Puppets still stand out as one of the most interesting groups to emerge from the heady, D.I.Y., genre-bending days of '90s alternative rock. With a barely categorizable sound that blended the speed and aggression of hardcore punk with country twang and psychedelic swirl, they were signed to Black Flag-founder Greg Ginn's seminal SST Records label alongside acts like the Gun Club and the Violent Femmes. In the late '90s, the band was basically canonized by an invitation from Kurt Cobain to join him on MTV Unplugged -- though bassist Cris Kirkwood's debilitating cocaine and heroin habit forced the band's dissolution not long after. In 2006, the group reunited with brothers Cris and Curt Kirkwood (on guitar and vocals), but without original drummer Derrick Bostrom, and this summer released the album Rise to Your Knees -- a forceful, intricate collection of songs that testify to the band's already apparent resilience. The Comas, who began playing their garagey psych-pop in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the late '90s, open the show. Tickets $15. -- Alison Fensterstock
