Metal Blade Records 25th Anniversary Tour

A quarter-century ago, record-store flunky and fanzine writer Brian Slagel scratched a pentagram in the dirt off the Sunset Strip with the claw of a dead rat, and Metal Blade Records was born. (Actually, he gathered together some songs for a compilation of L.A.-based unsigned bands and got them distribution. Same difference.) Over the years, his label launched major metal acts including Metallica, Slayer, Ratt and Cannibal Corpse. The lattermost -- founded in the late '80s and still one of the most gruesome, sick and wrong death-metal acts ever to emerge from the U.S. -- is headlining Metal Blade's triumphant 25th anniversary all-metal revue tour, which will ravage the country from coast to coast and salt the earth behind them so no crops will grow. Cannibal Corpse's necrotic attack is bolstered by up-and-coming Detroit thrashers the Black Dahlia Murder, bearded speed-metal monsters the Absence and the Red Chord (pictured). If this party doesn't have you spitting blood from sheer, grinding awesomeness (or demonic possession), ask for your money back. Tickets $20. -- Alison Fensterstock
