Mirliton Festival 

The Bywater Neighborhood Association's (BNA) annual charge is to invent new ways to stuff a mirliton. Recent iterations of this tongue-in-cheek block party — as much a celebration of New Orleanians' proclivity to celebrate as a fete of the locally beloved, nationally ignored chayote squash — have focused on bands from the riverside borough. This 20th anniversary edition is filled to the brim with a music lineup covering all the Bywater bases: boozy shanties (Valparaiso Men's Chorus), bounce anthems (DJ Jubilee), boxcar folk (Hurray For the Riff Raff) and brash punk (King Louie Bankston). It's matched by food and wine from the Country Club, the Joint, Satsuma Cafe and Bacchanal, as well as many permutations of the pear-shaped gourd. Tickets $5, BNA members $3. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
