Re: “What to do with New Orleans’ Confederate monuments

New Orleans should look to Richmond, Va. (the former capital of the Confederacy); their Monuments Ave. not only includes busts of various Confederate leaders but also Richmond's own Arthur Ashe (take that Confederate generals!). The interesting aspect of adding monuments (instead of just removing them all) is that you can't fully understand the importance of folks like Arthur Ashe without knowing the history of what they had to overcome. And to see statutes like that side by side makes a more powerful impact.

Re: “What should replace Lee Circle?

There's a difference between a flag and a monument. Nola should instead learn from Richmond's Monument Ave., where a long line of confederate statutes also includes a statute honoring Arthur Ashe. To learn from mistakes of the past and to keep dialogue flowing, we should instead be asking what new monuments we want up to celebrate various women's and civil rights leaders.
