Nancy Drew & the Hardy Boys in "The Wax Museum Mystery"

For years, Flynn De Marco mulled over the idea of bringing his boyhood idols, the sleuthing Hardy Boys, to life onstage -- even in his pre-Running With Scissors (RWS) days in the San Francisco theater scene. But something always seemed to get in the way. Until, that is, Elizabeth Pierce joined the happy campers a couple years ago, but more importantly, began to blossom over this period. Because that provided De Marco with the Hardy Boys' female doppelganger, Nancy Drew. "I thought, she is Nancy Drew!" says De Marco, who finally co-penned this homage/satire with Richard Read to complete RWS' busy summer schedule. (The recent staged reading of Valley of the Dolls was to die for.) "And when I told her, she said, 'Oh my God, it's like a dream come true!'" Why the Hardy Boys fixation? "When I was a kid I loved to read, and these guys seemed so cool," says De Marco, who plays Joe opposite RWS newcomer Rod Lemaire's Frank. "They had lots of cool stuff and had endless money to do all these things and travel to all these interesting countries. They had a supernatural spin on it I really found interesting. When the TV came on in the '70s, I was all over that with Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy." De Marco has added his obsession with wax museums for good measure, and notes that this is RWS' first original script in more than two years. Should be fun, as usual. Tickets $17. The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon will host the July 29 performance; call 525-4498 for tickets to that performance.

8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, July 15-16; through Aug. 6
