New Research Center for Xavier

Xavier University of Louisiana has received a five-year, $10.1 million grant to develop a cancer research center. The money will be used to establish core laboratories, buy instrumentation, hire technical staff and pay for pilot research projects.

The National Center for Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health and its Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) program, awarded the grant. Xavier is one of four institutions selected to receive a total of $75 million over five years to support minority research centers. The others are Charles Drew University, Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine.

Xavier's cancer research program's goal is to increase the number of quality cancer researchers, provide them with mentoring opportunities, provide seed funding for developmental projects, enhance professional development opportunities and increase access to postdoctoral associates and research staff. — Kandace Power Graves
