Nora Chipaumire 

Fans of contemporary and modern dance have the opportunity to see a rare artist whose style melds genres and whose experience transcends borders when Nora Chipaumire performs in New Orleans for the first time. Known for her work as a principal member of the Urban Bush Women, a New York dance company comprised of women of the African Diaspora, Chipaumire has choreographed and performed pieces with dance companies from San Francisco to Europe. Through use of modern, avant-garde dance technique infused with elements of African dance, Chipaumire's work addresses the volatile climate of her war-torn native Zimbabwe. Her New Orleans performance comes at the end of the 16-day New Orleans Dance Festival. In addition to Chipaumire's solo piece, the program includes seven other works by local and visiting dancers from Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, who collaborated with Chipaumire. Students from around the country who have been participating in the festival's workshops also will participate in the festival's closing performance. -- Lauren LaBorde
