Re: “Gnome

I love this store, have bought about 15 hats over a period of a year and a half, and quite a bit of Skylar Fein's great art (Skylar shows at a gallery now so there isn't as much at Gnome as there once was). If the owner knows you like something he'll get it for you (in the earlier life of the store I bought two really unique Oriental paint-by-numbers there and for months after, every time Bryant found another Oriental paint-by-numbers he would get it and set it aside for me for me). His taste is exquisite and the price levels are very reasonable, he and his staff are always friendly and helpful. It's a surprise to find such a quality shopping experience in the Quarter.

Re: “We Aren't the World

The other disasters weren't the responsibility of giant corporations with deep pockets who are going to have to pay for a substantial part of the loss. I feel fortunate to have a President who keeps that fact foremost, who hasn't given in to the usual "the corporation is always right" thinking that most of our elected officials adhere to.

I've wondered, if I send money to this or that organization, will it specifically go to this disaster or just go into their general fund because they're getting money from BP to do the work specific to this? Also, from hearing about what the recovery and rescue efforts are like from friends who have tried to volunteer, it's not the kind of grassroots let's all pitch in and help the environment movement that usually attracts donations, it's very very controlled and many volunteers have been frustrated by their inability to get in there and get their hands dirty.

I think the idea of raising money to help out the locals who are losing their livelihoods while they wait for BP money is great, but who is going to administer that? How will that actually work? How will the $300,000 raised by the aid concert be distributed? It's too easy to say, hey, good cause, needy people and animals, give some money and you'll be part of the solution. It's too easy to post this stuff on Facebook and if you RSVP yes, you've helped the Gulf. If I knew where the money was going I'd happily give it.

When Katrina happened I wasn't a resident of New Orleans yet, and my first reaction was to send large checks to Red Cross and other agencies I assumed would be on the front lines. Then I read that the Red Cross was basically to afraid to go into New Orleans for a long time; I would have been better off sending checks to individual people to help them get out or get their lives restarted, or to finance individual volunteers who went down to help when things were a mess. Since then, that's how I've approached giving.
