Okra

Becky Allen is back as Lillian Bourgeois, the mothering, smothering compulsive video-gambling matriarch in Okra. In a reprise of a show that ran for four months before Katrina pulled the curtains, Okra is a comedy that finds the family fun in dysfunctional, drops it in crab boil and lets it simmer. Lillian appears to enjoy the comfort of her pills and slot machines as much as her grown daughters, while they are as concerned about her estate as her state of mind. They're all cooking up schemes to remedy each other's foibles before she gambles away their inheritance or they turn into spinsters. Now at True Brew, the space is intimate enough to make you feel like they're your own loving family. Written by Galliano, La., native Anne Galjour, the play won the Bay Area Theatre Critic's Circle Award for best original script after it premiered in San Francisco in 2004. Allen is joined by Anne-Liese Jure-Fox, Tony Molina, Denise Ponce and Manuel Ponce. The play is directed by Perry Martin. Tickets $21. -- Will Coviello
