On the Job Training 

Matriculating at Grammy U doesn't actually guarantee you a statuette, but the hope is, it'll help. The program is a nationwide network of college students who are interested in getting a head start learning the ins and outs of the music biz, and the "faculty" are recording-industry pros who work with the budding David Geffens and Allen Toussaints via networking, performance opportunities and out-of-the-classroom mentoring. With the program now in its third year, this party celebrates the official launch of Grammy U's New Orleans outpost. Performing are a cross-section of New Orleans-area artists on the rise, including the prolific singer-songwriter MyNameIsJohnMichael, who spent 2008 writing and recording a song a week. The rough-edged psych-pop act Caddywhompus, Baton Rouge rapper and LSU marketing major Dee-1 (pictured), and the TIP Interns. Tickets $10, $8 for Grammy U students. — Alison Fensterstock
