Poi Dog Pondering

The mellow ensemble music of the dozen-plus Hawaii dwellers known as Poi Dog Pondering has been soothing indie-rockers since the late '80s. With membership that can swell to 18 or 20 on wax, and at least a dozen live, the band creates a subtly nuanced wash of sound that comes across like the natural hum " twittering parrots, tropical breezes in the hibiscus, and so on " of an island paradise. Guitar, violin, mandolin, keyboards, tambourine, horns and accordion create a shimmering, fluid, soulful orchestral swell that ebbs and flows as gently as equatorial seas, and live video displays of erupting volcanoes and cresting waves add to an overall feeling of utter organic lull. Its seventh full-length release, the softly poppy (and appropriately titled) 7, was released on Platetectonic Music last month. Tickets $13.50. — Alison Fensterstock
