This State Property Reunion Concert needs some explanation. Like the Bad Company of hip-hop, State Property is many things: a film (released in 2002, starring Beanie Sigel and Jay Z); a soundtrack (featuring Beanie Sigel and produced by Jay Z, unsurprisingly outstripping the film); a group (see above, signed by Jay Z to Roc-A-Fella Records); and a Rocawear-spinoff clothing line (you get the picture). Anything Jay Z can do, Beanie Sigel can do smaller. But sometimes better: Sigel's 2005 LP The B. Coming — cut in the months between being convicted on drug and weapon charges and the start of a federal prison sentence — is arguably the best album by either artist in the past decade, a filler-free roundhouse kick with the amber glow of '70s deep soul. Sigel has a long and checkered history with law and order, yet along with his Philadelphia State Property crew (Freeway, Young Gunz), he's also one of the most honest MCs around and an absolute savant at choosing the perfect producer for a track for a specific mood. (See his dead-on collaboration with Heavy D on the sax-sighing "Feel It In the Air," or just about any other song on The B. Coming.) After recuperating from a nearly fatal gunshot wound late last year and squashing a longstanding beef with Jay Z onstage in May, Sigel has reformed State Property for what promises to be a familial parade of South Philly sluggers (Freeway, Young Gunz and "more"). There's nothing like a brush with death to bring someone back to life. Tickets $30.
