Red Dress Run

The phrase "painting the town red" gets a whole new meaning from the New Orleans Hash Harriers Red Dress Run. Far from a posh and decadent evening out, it's more like a mob of sprinting drunks wearing flashy red dresses. Several hundred Harriers push up the pace of a pub crawl on a 3-mile course that begins at Utopia on Bourbon Street and continues throughout the day on a route that is revealed during the run. Hash groups, which are loosely-organized drinking and running clubs, can be found all over the world, and many other cities host similar red dress runs. Local organizers say that the event has never been socially redeeming, but this year, some of the proceeds benefit City Park. The beer will start flowing 10 a.m. at Utopia. The run begins at 1 p.m. The fee includes race, beer and post-race meal. Online registration is $25 before Aug. 8, $40 at the door. -- Emily Hohenwarter
