Rising Tide 6 at Xavier University

The year after Hurricane Katrina, a group of local bloggers staged the first Rising Tide, "a conference on the future of New Orleans." Now, five years later, Rising Tide has become a fixture on New Orleans' August calendar, presenting a day's worth of panels on politics, arts, culture and the environment. This year's event will feature keynote speeches by Tulane University geographer Richard Campanella (9:30 a.m.) and David Simon (pictured), creator of Treme and The Wire (2 p.m.). New at this year's Rising Tide will be "Tech School," a series of concurrent panels on how to use blog software, social media and more.

Several Gambit writers and contributors also will be on hand. Staff writer Alex Woodward will moderate "Re-Capping the Well," a panel on the Macondo oil disaster, while Blog of New Orleans' second-line correspondent Big Red Cotton will moderate a panel on brass band culture. That panel will feature Gambit sportswriter Alejandro de los Rios, who is producing Brass Roots, a documentary on the city's brass band traditions. For more information or to register for the conference, go to Tickets $30 general admission, $18 students. — Kevin Allman
