Roemer vs. Landrieu?

First she lands a major amendment in the Senate's health care bill for Louisiana's Medicaid program, and now she's fighting fellow Democrats in the House to keep it alive. If that weren't enough, four conservative operatives were busted last week while meddling with her office phones in New Orleans. These are indeed strange times for U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu. But the biggest fight she faces could be her own re-election, even though it's still four years away. While an ongoing recall effort is a long shot — constitutionally, only the U.S. House and Senate can remove members — names of potential challengers are beginning to sprout. The latest is Chas Roemer, a freshman on the state BESE Board and, more notably, son of former Gov. Buddy Roemer. He's also a Republican, a 1992 honors grad of Harvard University and an aggressive attention-getter. His recent op-eds on higher education, for example, have been well received statewide. At 40, the younger Roemer also strikes a stark contrast to Landrieu, a three-term vet. Reportedly, the campaign could gear up sooner than later. Phone calls and emails seeking comment from Chas Roemer were not returned by press time. — Jeremy Alford
