With temperatures dropping and the holidays looming, the indoor season is almost upon us — and it may be time to pull out the rugs. An accent or area rug can be an easy, affordable way to revamp a living space and bring extra warmth to chilly floors during winter months, says Leslie Breaux of Brown and Damare Wholesale Rugs (900 Dakin St., Jefferson, 833-1155).

Cameron Trenor of Cameron Jones For Your Home (2127 Magazine St., 524-3119) says new materials are breathing life into traditional textures. "A big trend we've seen recently, funnily enough, is the return of shag carpeting, but in surprising materials, like leather and ribbon," he says. "Something like that can become a real conversation piece." Breaux has noticed a surge of new rugs made from sustainable materials like sea grass and thistle. "People love these because they're pretty and affordable, in addition to being green," she says.

Both Breaux and Trenor agree that in many cases, a custom rug can be the best bet. "It can be difficult to find the right rug for a room after it's been furnished," Trenor says. With custom rugs, clients create a rug based on a room's existing color palette to fit the proportions of any desired space. "These days we can do really anything a customer wants," Breaux says. "There's something for everyone."

Leslie Breaux and Cameron Trenor's Tips for Purchasing a Rug

1. Assess your area. How big is the space you're filling? Is it a high-traffic area? Will kids and pets be in the room frequently? Where will the furniture sit? Knowing the types of activity occurring on and around the rug can help you choose an appropriate color and material, Breaux says.

2. Be a materialist. Not all materials are created equal. Wool quality, for example, depends largely on the climate and country of the sheep from whence it came. Trenor recommends New Zealand's wool for its longer fibers, which are less inclined to shed and pill. Being aware of the benefits of different fabrics can help you select rugs with long-term potential.

3. Know when to save and when to splurge. The availability of good-quality rugs in affordable materials like faux silk and polyester means there are options for every budget, Breaux says. If you're going to splurge, she suggests doing so in the bedroom, where the added luxury goes a long way toward creating a comfortable and tranquil space.

4. Channel some whimsy. Creating a custom rug is easier than ever and allows you to explore your more creative side. Recently, a Cameron Jones client worked with Trenor to design a rug shaped like smiling red lips. By opting for custom, she was able to pinpoint the personal element she desired in the room, he says.

5. Think present and future perfect. The beauty of area and accent rugs lies in their mobility — they can be rearranged at a moment's notice or rolled up to accompany you on a cross-country move. Choosing a rug thoughtfully and carefully means ending up with a great accent piece that will continue to help define your home, wherever it is, for years to come.
