Re: “Review: The Plaza Tower, reimagined, in Tower Fantasy

Where did you receive your inaccurate information regarding the original planned height of the Plaza Tower? If it were originally conceived to be only 12 stories there would not have been need to change the zoning height restrictions in order to accomplish the first high rise built in the city of New Orleans. The Plaza Tower was conceived after the acquisition of 225 Baronne St., which is 30 stories. While Plaza Tower was being constructed, the annex was added on the Loyola Ave. side and additional floors were added above the parking garage on Howard Ave. to accommodate additional tenants. The rooftop dome was an afterthought conceived by my father, Sam J. Recile while in re-organization. While Leonard Spangenberg was an excellent architect discovered by my father, it required my father's vision in order to conceive the structure for which Leonard has been most recognized. Sam J. Recile has been noted as the father of downtown development and the savior of the French Quarter, but unfortunately fell victim to the money crunch of the mid-1960s just as William Zeckendorf and other major developers of that time.
