Satchmo SummerFest returns to the Mint Aug. 4-6 

The festival celebrates Louis Armstrong's birthday with music, panels and more

Satchmo Summerfest celebrates Louis Armstrong around the time of his birthday with three days of music on three stages and scholarly presentations at the Old U.S. Mint.

  There is a music stage inside the Mint and two stages outdoors. Friday's lineup features Nicholas Payton (pictured) & Afro-Caribbean Mixtape, The Preservation Brass, Wendell Brunious, Hot 8 Brass Band, James Andrews, Stephanie Jordan and others. On Saturday, there's Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs, Bill Summers & Jazalsa, John Boutte, Treme Brass Band, Joe Lastie's New Orleans Sound, Robin Barnes and the Fiyabirds, Corey Henry's Treme Funktet and Topsy Chapman and Solid Harmony. Sunday brings Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers, Ellis Marsalis, Charmaine Neville, Evan Christopher's Clarinet Road, The Original Pinettes Brass Band and Don Vappie & the Creole Jazz Serenaders. Dancing lessons are interspersed with music sets at the Back o' Town Stage.

  The conference features jazz historians including Dan Morgenstern, Armstrong biographer Gary Giddins and Louis Armstrong House Museum archivist Ricky Riccardi, who presents video clips such as a 1970 episode of The Mike Douglas Show hosted by Armstrong.

  The festival also includes food vendors, kids activities and a jazz Mass at St. Augustine's Catholic Church and a second-line parade on Sunday. Festival admission is $5 and free for children ages 12 and under.
