Second Generation

The 35th annual Jazz & Heritage Festival gets ready for Week Two.

As Britney Spears once said: baby one more time. The first weekend of the 35th annual Jazz & Heritage Festival featured second lines and South Africa, Steve Winwood and Supagroup. And now it's time for the second coming -- the second and final week of the world's greatest musical event.

I, Count Basin™, your official guide to the Fest, was there to see the first week, and I'm here to do it again, providing a comprehensive preview for music lovers from near and far. The fest is by far the best way to sample and enjoy Louisiana culture and heritage, which encompasses a musical spectrum that includes but isn't limited to Cajun and zydeco, jazz and blues, Native American and Mardi Gras Indian. And don't even get me started on the food. All right, get me started on the food.

Inside this trusty guide, you will find a complete listing and description of every act, my personal critic's picks, profiles of particularly noteworthy artists, and reviews of CDs by performing artists. It's all the music news you can use. Elsewhere in this issue is a look at new releases by The Dirty Dozen and ReBirth brass bands and at what's going on around town away from the Fair Grounds.

So slather on the sunscreen, unfold your chair, and wave your flag. It's time enjoy the best of this Fest.
