Re: “The New Orleans Assessors Race

My read on this insightful article is that Williams rejected the reform that 66% of the voters citywide chose to implement and that Mauberret, Williams, Mire, the current Assessor's who are running for this one Assessor seat, will probably hire each other if one of them gets in. Sadly, this will continue the favoritism that has clearly been in play for decade upon decade. I can’t stand the thought of that when we can change it all by electing someone new and honest, with no history of this behavior.

The reform of this key office is critical to New Orleans continuing to move forward and be a place where people are treated fairly, and where you don’t have to know someone to get treated that way. How about fairly and consistently assessing all of the property throughout the City as close to fair market value as is practically possible? None of the other longtime Assessors have ever, ever done this. Why? My guess is what we all suspect: because of their "protectionism" toward the property owners in their district. They would keep getting re-elected as long as they kept everyone in their district paying lower rates. But this hurts new homebuyers and people who don’t have connections. Who don’t work the system and expect and practice cronyism. There has just been too much of this and it’s hurt our city’s reputation, and is just another place, another little creepy place, where favoritism takes a toehold, then a foothold and then we’re off and running the same old game. It bothers me to think that there are thousands of people in New Orleans who aren’t paying their fair share of property taxes because they “know” their Assessor.
