All citizens of New Orleans should have quality and safe housing. Minimum standards are in fact too low. The current proposal is not the best method. Administered by a California company that makes money by finding problems is not the best solution in New Orleans. Having a tenant hotline that triggers a letter from the city to the landlord that must be responded to while protecting the tenant from eviction would be a better method. At the city council meeting the number of rentals was estimated at 70,000 and the number of subpar 10 + apartments with somewhere between 3500 and 7000. This represents 10% of the stock. We can have a fair process for everyone involved without having to Levy dollars on everybody because of a few.
