Sounds of the Big Band Era

The Glenn Miller Story has a scene in which Jimmy Stewart, at a U.S.O. gig in wartime Europe, keeps his orchestra rolling through the swingingly civilized tones of Miller's signature song 'In The Mood" while Nazi planes scatter bombs all around. Whether or not that ever actually happened, it is a fact that big band swing music was the soundtrack for American and European morale throughout World War II. The ace jazz ensemble Dimensions in Blue (part of the United States Air Force Band of the West, based in Texas) plans to recreate that vibe " dressed to emulate the look of Miller's Army Air Corps Jazz Band " by playing a set of swinging classics from a host of the era's popular orchestras. Free admission. — Alison Fensterstock
