Survivors : New and Vintage Paintings by George Dunbar

If we could flash back to August 2005, we would have found veteran local artist George Dunbar preparing for his upcoming Heriard-Cimino show, scheduled for October of that year. In what is by now an all too familiar story, his Slidell studio and many of his most recent works were washed away by Katrina's tidal surge. Flash-forward to the present, and Dunbar is finally having his October show, albeit in a somewhat modified form. Aptly titled Survivors, it's a selection of recent paintings and outstanding earlier works, but this retrospective approach is perhaps only appropriate for an artist whose local exhibition history dates back a half century, to the 1950s. In Survivors, we can observe the evolution of Dunbar's work while celebrating the long and distinguished career of this erstwhile New Orleans artist. -- Eric D. Bookhardt
