Swell Season and Hidden Cameras

How many clubs manage to compete against themselves? Call it a tos-sup between these two disparate, simultaneous bookings: the heartstrings-tugging, Oscar-winning guitars and harmonies of Ireland's Swell Season (aka Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard, pictured, of Once film fame) along with the smoky singing and ivory-tinkling of Joni Mitchell ringer Rachael Yamagata; versus the Toronto indie-rock twofer of the Hidden Cameras and Gentleman Reg, both creative, breakout former Broken Social Scenesters. The quandary wraps up a veritable concert sweeps week at the House of Blues, which hosts four more recommended acts in the 48 hours prior. Uncle Tupelo offshoot and alt-country ancestor Son Volt visits with British-born Americana singer/songwriter Peter Bruntnell at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (tickets $18.50), and Anthony Perkins offspring and scary talent Elvis Perkins is joined by raspy-voiced Alabama troubadour AA Bondy at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (tickets $11.50 in advance, $12.50 day of show). Taken in total, the lineup forms a sublime octagonal sample of transatlantic folk/rock. Swell Season tickets $33.50; Hidden Cameras tickets $11.50 in advance, $13.50 day of show. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
