Re: “Eloping in New Orleans

Looking to get married in New Orleans? Think again, only proceed further if you are interested in immersing yourself in a beauracratic nightmare.

Three years ago, my husband, or I guess the acurate phrase now, is significant other, were married in New Orleans with all the necessary, accurate papers provided. When I received the certified marriage certificate, my first and middle name were transposed. Since that time I have been attempting to get this corrected, to no avail, even though continuing to send checks to New Orleans parish with all the required documentation and information.

In January of this year, my "husband" and I went to New Orleans courthouse, having called ahead of time and being told we just needed our identifications as all other papers had previously been provided. SURPRISE! We go to the New Orleans courthouse and are now told I need to have my birth certificate, which had previously been supplied. Fruitless trip from Florida.

Returning to Florida, I again sent the required papers and check in and yesterday received a letter stating I needed an amended birth certificate to match the name on my license and social security card. WHAT???? After speaking to Kathy Crochet and going over the facts of what has occurred in the past three years and my attempts to get this corrected, my concerns for my safety, the legitimacy of my children and my own desire to hold on to that part of me that connects me to my parents and my birth name, I have met with a cold steel wall.

So now the only way to legitimize this three year marriage is to illegitimize the children from my first marriage and put myself in physical danger due to the fact that the Florida court system changed my name in its entirety to protect me.

So, if you are interested in a logistic nightmare and legal problems, by all means, get married in "The Big Easy." Let me tell you, there is nothing easy about it.
