The Best and the Worst of the Week

Mignon Faget,
local artist and jewelry designer, has donated $125,000 to the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation to benefit local museums, galleries and NOCCA. Faget presented a check to Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu at a luncheon marking the one-year anniversary of the foundation, which was formed shortly before Katrina struck last Aug. 29. After the storm, the foundation began the Louisiana Rebirth campaign. Faget designed her Rebirth Pin, a fleur de lis on blue ribbon, as a fundraising piece.

The UNO Ambassadors
were recognized as the 2006 "Student Ambassador Outstanding Organization" at the 33rd annual network convention of the Association of Student Advancement Programs held recently in San Antonio, Texas. The Ambassadors were chosen for their "commitment and drive to succeed even in the face of the overwhelming destruction of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath," says Charlene Steele, Ambassador advisor. Despite the storm, the students took on a full agenda of volunteer and fundraising activities.

the cable network devoted to homes and gardens, turned its cameras and its pocketbook recently on the historic Holy Cross neighborhood in the Lower Ninth Ward as part of the network's "Restore America" public affairs campaign. Several homes in the Holy Cross neighborhood will be restored and featured in the campaign. HGTV also donated $100,000 to the Preservation Resource Center, which is helping restore those and many other homes in the Holy Cross neighborhood.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
admits that pumps it ordered for three crucial drainage canals in New Orleans vibrate so badly that they may not be usable in the event Corps-built floodgates on those canals have to be closed. The pumps were specially made for the canal projects, and Corps officials could not explain why they didn't notice the vibrations during tests that the Corps supervised in the manufacturer's lab. If the problem is not fixed, closing the floodgates during a rainy hurricane will impair drainage and flood the city.
