The Best and the Worst of the Week

Dr. Larry Hollier,
chancellor of the LSU Health Sciences Center and dean of the LSU School of Medicine, has been appointed to a visiting professorship named in his honor at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The professorship is in vascular surgery, a division Hollier founded during his tenure at Mayo. A graduate of the LSU School of Medicine, Hollier joined the faculty at Mayo Clinic in 1980. More recently, he led LSU medical school's recovery after Hurricane Katrina.

Loyola University
placed sixth in a list of top universities in the South region for master's degree programs, according to the U.S. News & World Report's 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges." For the last 17 years, Loyola has been listed in the top 10 for regional universities in the South for master's degree studies, which is impressive and becomes extraordinary when you consider two of the 17 years occurred after Hurricane Katrina.

Fountain Baptist Church
raised $1 million over the course of two years for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The 2,000-member church, the oldest African-American church in Summit, N.J., accomplished this by tithing more than expected each month. Call it congregational lagniappe. The church is partnering with Lott Carey, a global missionary agency, in order to support Resurrection Resource Centers, which are hurricane assistance centers located in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Mark Smith,
former director of the state's film tax credits program, was recently charged by federal prosecutors with accepting $67,500 in bribes from a yet-unnamed film production company. The company allegedly bribed Smith, then an official with the Louisiana Department of Economic Development, so he would approve inflated film budgets, which then increased the number of tax credits the company could receive. Smith reportedly will cut a deal on his plea and cooperate with investigators.
