Kenmore East High School Band of Buffalo, N.Y.,
raised more than $20,000 in cash and instruments for the music program at Lusher Charter School. After a 1,250-mile journey by bus, the band personally delivered the gifts to Lusher in mid-April, then gave a concert — featuring the Kenmore East jazz band and a newly formed Dixieland jazz outfit — at the Creole Queen dock. The band's 100-plus members also worked on houses and collected garbage in Gentilly.

is donating $1 million over a five-year period to the Plaquemines Legacy Campaign. The campaign, which hopes to raise $5 million in a public-private partnership, will supplement FEMA reimbursements to help provide additional facilities for four community centers that are being rebuilt in Plaquemines Parish. Jay Blossman,
a member of the state Public Service Commission, sent a letter to 235 motor carriers — which are regulated by the PSC — asking them to take a sales meeting with his golfing buddy Nicholas Larussa. Blossman instructed a member of his staff to print the letters on PSC stationery. According to the Times-Picayune, Blossman said he didn't commit a crime by sending the letters and added that if there is a law against what he did, "the law needs to be changed." Actually, Blossman is what needs to be changed.
