Julia Bland,
executive director of Louisiana Children's Museum, was appointed by President Bush to a five-year term on the National Museum and Library Services Board. The board is a 24-member advisory body to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, an independent federal agency that is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 17,500 museums and 122,000 libraries. Bland is the only board representative from Louisiana.

Nancy Easterlin,
a University of New Orleans research professor, has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to support a book project she currently is undertaking. Easterlin, an interdisciplinary scholar, combines cognitive and evolutionary psychology with literary criticism and history, and this will be her third scholarly work to date. She is among 190 fellows the John Guggenheim Memorial Foundation chose this year from a field of 2,615 applicants in the United States and Canada.

the global communications corporation, has donated $50,000 to Chalmette High School to rebuild and upgrade the school's broadband infrastructure and video technology, which was destroyed after the levee failures. The money will be spent on state-of-the-art equipment including set-top boxes for high-definition video capabilities in the classroom and high-speed modems for Internet service. It will be housed in the new Chalmette High School Lacoste Campus that is scheduled to open in the autumn of 2009.

Louisiana's Department of Transportation
neglected to repair a steel barrier, which remained broken for more than a decade, on the Judge Seeber Bridge over the Industrial Canal, where New Orleans Police Officer Tommie Felix accidentally plunged to his death on May 20. The barrier would have prevented Felix's car from going over the raised bridge. As a preliminary investigation revealed, the bridge's operator also was partially at fault for not lowering additional warning gates and making sure these gates were down before raising the bridge.
