IN THE FIRST FOUR DAYS OF THE 2017 ENROLLMENT PERIOD, more than 600,000 people signed up for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, aka Obamacare). About 23 percent of those were new enrollees. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, 441,781 Louisianans have enrolled in health insurance programs since Medicaid expansion was enacted in the state last year under Gov. John Bel Edwards.

President Donald Trump and many Congressional Republicans have insisted the ACA is unsustainable, even as Congress failed to pass several proposed replacements — including one cosponsored by Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, a physician.

The signup period for new enrollees ends Dec. 15.
