There's No Place Like Home

For this exhibition, mixed-media artist Melissa Roberts has created "home furnishings" from stitched paper, thread, yarn and found objects suspended by microfilament from the ceiling. Appearing at dreamlike angles, they challenge the viewer to look at familiar things in new ways. "I'm attempting a type of visual palate cleansing in response to the force-fed information I receive on a daily basis," she says. "This series, in particular, is in reaction to the mass marketing of prescribed consumer home life." Also included are Francine Stock's "sewn glass chairs" that "trace an evolution of structural investigation"; Jessica Goldfinch's exploration of "ideas of mortality through spiritual and scientific images" appearing as shrinky-dink sculpture; and Kurt Schlough's surreal photographs of Roberts' furnishings. The Pottery Barn was never like this. — D. Eric Bookhardt
