Re: “Smoke Signals

I once read that it's not how much you smoke, but how long you've been smoking. I was a smoker for 31 years. In April 2008 I set a target date of July 28, 2008 to quit and stuck to it. I have been smoke free for 9.5 months now. It's been very difficult especially with the death of my father and an illness of my mother, but I've had a lot of support from family and friends. There were a few things I did to help keep me from starting up again. First, I retrained my thinking. I kept telling myself things like, "I am not a smoker. I was not born that way. I want clean healthy lungs." Second, I disassociated myself from those that did smoke and lastly, for a long time, I stayed away from places that allowed smoking. Even though I think about it a lot, it will always be a struggle, but the longer you go the easier it gets.
