The Rev. Pedro F. Nunez
received the Guillermo De Bango Excellence in the Arts Award from the Cervantes Fundacion Hispanoamericana de Arte, which produces October's Que Pasa Fest in Lafreniere Park. Nunez immigrated to the U.S. in 1962 from Havana, Cuba, and was ordained a priest by the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 1977. He directs the Archdiocese's Mensaje ministry and hosts several radio programs.

Mark Romig
was given the rank of Chevalier of the National Order of Merit on behalf of France. The award recognizes the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation president's efforts supporting the Consulate General of France in Louisiana and the city's French community. Chevalier is its highest rank of the order, which was founded in 1963. Romig also has received the University of New Orleans Homer Hitt Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2016.

Jeff Landry,
Louisiana's attorney general, blamed New Orleans' status as a "sanctuary city" for encouraging the "migration of illegals," following an accident involving Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez, who was driving a bus that killed two people and injured more than 30 others on Interstate 10 Aug. 28. The driver is living in the U.S. illegally — in Jefferson Parish. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, "The old adage of never letting a good crisis go to waste is on full display."
