The W.K. Kellogg Foundation
awarded a $500,000 three-year grant to Covenant House to support a "two-generation" system providing case management, behavioral health care, early childhood development, education and vocational training, counseling and other services. The homeless shelter cares for more than 50 families each year.

The University of New Orleans Privateers
men's basketball team made its first NCAA Tournament berth in 21 years. The team entered the First Four round March 14 against Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers but ultimately lost 67-66. The Privateers won the Southland Conference title game March 11.

Shirley Whittington,
former head of the Emergency Medical Services department at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, pleaded guilty last month in U.S. District Court to wire fraud linked to funds meant for recreational improvements for prison staff and families. Whittington spent at least $70,000 on personal items and withdrew more than $17,000 in cash from ATMs.
