The 610 Stompers presented a grant for $5,610 to Upturn Arts, a Central City organization that provides arts camps to New Orleans children. The bequest, from the group's "Stompers Give Back" fund, was made Jan. 15 on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day during Upturn Arts' "I Have a Dream Camp."


The Hayride, the Baton Rouge-based conservative website, reacted to last week's Arctic snap with a story headlined "Guess It's FREEZING in Texas Because of Global Warming?". Someone ought to tell them that the Earth has two hemispheres, and in Australia — where it's summer — temperatures have topped 115 degrees, hot enough to kill thousands of flying foxes during the continent's third-hottest year on record.


The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA)paid an outside contractor $19,400 to stage a brief informal ceremony commemorating the opening of the new Cemeteries Transit Center, | The Times-Picayune reported last week. That cost, paid to local company In The Event Inc. included a tent, stage, foliage and "commemorative VIP gifts." The RTA currently has no executive director since Greg Cook stepped down in September.
