Unborn in the USA: Inside the War on Abortion

In the battle over abortion, the mantle of activism may be shifting to the anti-abortion side and this film looks at the movement's increasing sophistication and access to political power. Filmmakers Stephen Fell and Will Thompson gained extraordinary access to groups like Focus on the Family and a prominent fundraising organization that worked for Bush-Cheney campaigns and concentrates on right to life causes. Most of their film, Unborn in the USA: Inside the War on Abortion, features pro-life activists talking about their beliefs, their methods and sometimes discussing disagreements within the movement. Focus on the Family sends a series of large-scale photos of gruesome mangled fetuses to college campuses to provoke debate with students. Fell and Thompson were able to film the training of the college-aged activists that staff the exhibit, and it's intriguing to hear their tactics laid out and discussed. The group spends time training participants how to argue with rape victims who are pro-choice. Other more disturbing scenes involve interviews with men who advocate assassinating doctors who perform abortions. The film isn't an overview of the entire issue and barely touches on the legal aspects, but it does a great job of listening to the organizers and new recruits to the pro-life movement. Tickets $7 general admission, $6 students/seniors, $5 Zeitgeist members. -- Will Coviello
