Wayne "The Train" Hancock at One Eyed Jacks

Space Cowboy

Guitarist Wayne "The Train" Hancock plays vintage, hillbilly-style Western swing, but his attitude is all punk rock. As he has been known to say, he's "like a stab wound in the fabric of country music in Nashville. See that bloodstain slowly spreading? That's me." Courtesy of his aggressive disposition and impeccable chops, country dancehall blues has never sounded so hardcore. Since 1995, he's been playing full-bore hillbilly boogie authentic enough to please both the traditionalists and the pompadoured rockabilly snobs (he counts an original member of Bob Wills' Texas Playboys among his fans), but he's no retro revivalist or museum piece. His sound is passionate and reckless enough to feel utterly contemporary. A fact for the trivia fans: Hancock is the only artist on the Bloodshot label to have one of his discs taken on a space shuttle flight. Now that's driving music. The New Orleans Jazz Vipers open. Tickets $7. — Alison Fensterstock
