Everything tastes good with ranch dressing.

At G's Pizza (4840 Bienville St., 504-483-6464;, house-made buttermilk ranch dressing is the restaurant's signature item. Every pizza comes with a side of ranch at G's, so customers can taste the flavor combination of cool ranch with hot, steamy pizza.

The family-friendly restaurant feeds folks in Mid-City and beyond thanks to the efforts of owner Gokmen Guler, known familiarly as "G." Guler built his business from small beginnings. He emigrated from Turkey nearly five years ago, working his way up from being a dishwasher to launching Magazine Pizza with a former business partner. When the partners parted ways, the Bienville location of the franchise became Guler's. He and manager and partner Ricky Ricard also run G's Kitchen Spot at Balcony Bar.

"G is a hard-working member of the community," Ricard says, "He exemplifies the notion of the American dream."

Today, G's Pizza is carving a niche in the bubbling New Orleans pizza scene with health-conscious options to supplement its extensive cafe menu. Seven days a week, this neighborhood joint serves lunch and dinner with an array of specials. Customer favorites include the NOLA Heat Wrap, the Chef Special chicken pesto po-boy and the City Park Salad.

Ricard also includes G's Buffalo wings on the must-try list. Though he admits, "everyone says that their (own) wings are the best," he backs up his claim with a description of chicken wings baked with a butter-based triple hot sauce.

The staff at G's is careful to promote a family atmosphere at the restaurant.

"We have arcade games, indoor and outdoor seating and play a mix of '60s and Motown music," Ricard says, "because we never want parents to have to guess what kind of environment their kids will be in when they come here."

Guler and Ricard's success over the past year means Guler can finally work a little less. Ricard is almost ready to reminisce about the days when the duo pulled daily double shifts to launch the restaurant.

Along with complimentary ranch dressing and a flow of Motown, G's offers nightly specials such as a second gourmet pizza for $1 on Wednesdays. For Tuesday date night, an in-house order of a pizza includes a select bottle of wine. Thursday is ladies' night, and women who dine in receive free wine. Monday night is family night and offers a large pizza, salad and appetizer for $25.
