Why donate blood? Are there health benefits?

"Ask the Experts" at East Jefferson General Hospital [Web Exclusive Content]

There are few instances in life where you can have such a positive impact on the lives of others. Blood saves lives. Yet, less than 5% of the population gives blood, which is often in short supply. Patients depend on donors. There is no substitute. Additionally, platelets are essential for the lives of cancer patients on chemotherapy. Should you need blood, you must depend upon a volunteer donor who has already donated. You also receive a mini-physical each time you donate, including blood pressure, hemoglobin value, cholesterol and temperature.

Tracie Crozat is the donor recruiter for the East Jefferson General Hospital Blood Bank. To contact her with questions about making a blood donation, or to make an appointment for a donation, call 504-454-5691.
