Wine of the week: 2015 Castillo de Monseran Garnacha

Carinena, Spain

Retail $8-$11

Carinena is the birthplace of the versatile garnacha grape (which is called cannonau in Sardinia and grenache in France). Winemaking in the Carinena region dates back to Roman times. Many of Carinena's vineyards sit at altitudes of 1,300 feet to 2,625 feet. The region's continental climate experiences both extreme variations in seasonal and daily temperatures, but cooling northerly breezes help to moderate summer heat and humidity. The unoaked wine exudes aromas of ripe red berries, a hint of dried herbs and earthiness. On the palate, taste dark cherry, raspberries, plum, subtle spice, fine tannins and good acidity. Open 15 minutes before serving. Drink it with beef stew, lamb meatballs, Italian sausage, ribs, pizza, tomato and pasta dishes. Buy it at: Rouses on North Carrollton Avenue, Whole Foods Market, Robert Fresh Market, Breaux Mart on Magazine Street and Cost Plus World Market.
