Wine of the Week

2003 Ferngrove Shiraz
Franklin River, Australia
$10-$13 Retail

Riding the wave of popular Australian wines, Ferngrove produces this value-priced, excellent wine in the Franklin River region of Western Australia, about 225 miles south of the coastal town of Perth. Made from 100 percent Shiraz, AustraliaÕs leading red grape and the same as the French Syrah, this wine is plum-scented with licorice notes and a whiff of black pepper followed by the characteristic, accessible, fruit-forward style the world has come to love, with supple, rich, intense berry flavors and a long finish. Splash decanting is recommended if drinking it now. It will improve with five to eight years of cellaring. Enjoy with roast duck, barbecue shrimp and rack of lamb. Where to buy it: Vieux Carre Wine and Spirits, ElioÕs Wine Warehouse and HughÕs Wine Cellar in Mandeville. Where to drink it: Delachaise, CafŽ Rani and Byblos on Magazine Street. (Listings current at press time.)
