What do horse racing and this fine Aussie wine have in common? In 1912, a six-race winning streak by a top-flight colt named Footbolt enabled its owner to purchase d'Arenberg's initial 1880s-era Shiraz vineyards. Over the years, the winery has established itself as one of South Australia's most distinguished producers. The Footbolt, a full-bodied, well-crafted wine with great depth and intense varietal and regional character, emits concentrated fragrances of red and black berries, dried herbs, peppery spices and coffee and cedar notes. On the palate, rich, ripe dark fruit flavors of currants, plums, blackberries and cranberries dominate, while hints of licorice, earth, chocolate and savory undertones are capped with a balanced acidity and even, yet edgy, tannins. It's approachable now, but will cellar well over the next eight to 10 years. A good match for hearty roasts, chops and root vegetable dishes. Where to buy it: Martin Wine Cellar in Metairie.
