YA/YA Fundraisers

Young Aspirations/Young Artists (YA/YA) invites New Orleanians to "Just Say YA/YA," an annual fundraiser supporting the art-education and professional-development program for area secondary school students. The event features a sale of works by current students and alumni in mediums including etched glass, handcrafted table and chair sets, oil paintings, stencil drawings and more. Current YA/YA students created their works as part of a summer internship, says program director Stella Baty Landis. "We pay them for production work in advance in the summer. But during the rest of the year, when one of our artists makes an artwork, 50 to 80 percent goes directly to them," she says. Students are available for commission work as well. Since 1988, the program has helped students develop their skills for careers in fine arts, design and other creative positions. Liberty's Kitchen and Cochon will provide food for the event. A patron party on Tuesday will offer attendees first pick of works in the showcase. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the YA/YA Studio at 529-3306. Tickets are $30 per person for the fundraiser, $250 per couple for the patron party. — Jessica Williams
