Mid-City’s long-running sushi spot Little Tokyo quietly closed last month, and a group of new owners have quickly reopened the space as a new Japanese restaurant.

Ikura Hibachi and Sushi, which took over the Mid-City Center spot at 310 N. Carrollton Avenue, opened last week, serving a similar menu of traditional and creative sushi rolls, as well as a host of new lunch and dinner items.

Owner Yusuke Kawahara opened the first of several Little Tokyo locations in Metairie in 1986. The local chain lost a few locations over the past few years, the latest of which was the Mid-City spot, which opened nearly 10 years ago, in 2008. A new group took over ownership of space mid-March, adding five hibachi tables and a list of new dishes to their roster. It's the group's first collaborative restaurant project, said part-owner and manager Indra Soeseno.

Loyal patrons of the Mid-City restaurant will notice that many of the menu items at the new spot are almost identical to its predecessor.

“We still have a lot of the same things, but we added more options for people that might want some other Asian dishes,” said Soeseno. Those dishes, Soeseno said, include Japanese pork and chicken katsu, Korean bulgogi, chicken and beef teriyaki, and a Thai-influenced chicken satay, among others.

There also areseveral ramen bowls, which include different iterations of the classic tonkotsu-style broth, topped with various add-ons, including grilled pork, slow-cooked pork ribs, buttered corn, melted cheese, seaweed, boiled egg and fried onions, among others.

The new restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner daily. For more information and the complete menu, visit the restaurant's Facebook page here.
