  • The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience takes place May 25-28.

The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience is this weekend (May 25-28), and it features more than 1,000 wines from more than 100 wineries and food from more than 75 New Orleans’ chefs.

Kicking off the festival’s 25th year on Thursday (May 25) are a host of wine dinners at restaurants throughout the city. This year, 25 restaurants, work with winemakers and wine reps to serve prix-fix dinners accompanied by wine pairings.

On Friday, the Royal Street Stroll starts at 5:30 p.m. and features a section of the French Quarter Street where galleries open their doors to guests and wine and food samples are stationed throughout the promenade (tickets are $115).

Saturday’s main event, the Grand Tasting, starts at 6 p.m. This year, the event is at Mardi Gras World.

“We’ve always been in the (Ernest N. Morial) Convention Center, but this is a much more quintessential New Orleans backdrop,” NOWFE Executive Director Jamie Hall says.

The indoor-outdoor space includes the riverfront plaza, where this years’ event will include food trucks and a barbecue area, while the majority of the food and wine tastings will be held inside the indoor ballroom, Hall says.

A burlesque and dessert mash-up takes place at The Big Gateaux Show, where a host of pastry chefs will compete for a $5,000 prize, and pastries and cocktails will be served while local burlesque dancers Trixie Minx and Bella Blue perform. It starts at 9 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to a list of seminars, this year includes Lifeway Presents: Bounce Ya Brass, a free bounce workshop from Robin Barnes and fitness instructor Shanda Domango. The pair will teach guests “signature NOLA bounce moves in an aerobic format,” with music from the Soul Brass Band, according to the event’s description. Bounce Ya Brass is free to the public and takes place Saturday morning at 1380 Port of New Orleans Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
