It's no surprise that beer and food go together, but the pairing is becoming more sophisticated in New Orleans, as in beer-pairing dinners in which brewers coordinate with chefs. Freret Beer Room opened to highlight beer and food pairings, and it hosts Founders Brewing Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan at a special dinner July 11. Below are some restaurants and breweries to sample food and drink together.

  • Freret Beer Room (5018 Freret St., 504-298-7468) was created as the city's first beer-centric restaurant, with a menu tailored to a beer-drinker's palate. It hosts a pairing dinner with Founders Brewing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 11. Founders will highlight its PC Pils, All Day IPA, Curmudgeon ale, Doom (a high-alcohol barrel-aged imperial stout) and KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout). Details are here.

  • The Avenue Pub (1732 St. Charles Ave., 504-586-9243) has a small kitchen that serves a menu created by consulting chef Nathaniel Zimet of Boucherie and Bourre. The menu of burgers and brats is complemented by vegetarian options and a selection of loaded fries. The Avenue Pub offers a wide array of American and imported craft beers.

  • NOLA Brewing Company (3001 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-896-9996) has the luxury of permanent resident McClure's BBQ handling the dining needs at its spacious taproom.

  • Courtyard Brewery (1020 Erato St.) features a rotating daily lineup of food trucks until 9 p.m., including Saigon Slim's, Frencheeze Food Truck and Taylor Made Wings on the Geaux.

  • Ancora Pizzeria & Salumeria (4508 Freret St., 324-1636) stepped up its suds game recently with a beer-pairing dinner (June 26) with Urban South brewery.

  • Port Orleans Brewing Company (5018 Freret St., 504-266-2332) has a full-service restaurant, Stokehold, in its taproom. Brew-friendly items include pretzel rolls made with spent grain from the brewery.
