  • Magasin Cafe will reopen in August with a more upscale look and menu.

The casual Vietnamese restaurant Magasin Cafe (4201 Magazine St.) has closed, and a renovated, more upscale take on the concept will open later this summer in the same space.

The Uptown restaurant closed last month to begin renovations on the space. The cafe will reopen in late August with changes to the physical space and menu.

The former menu focused on casual fare such as spring rolls, pho and banh mi. The new menu will feature a more “sophisticated and upscale traditional Vietnamese turn,” according to statement from owner Kim Nguyen. That could include more upscale decor, table service and a raw oyster bar. Menu items may include lotus stem or roasted veal salads, salt and pepper squid, braised abalone and sauteed lobster with noodles, the statement said. Some menu items from its predecessor, such as the Vietnamese crepe, will stay.

“We are excited to bring these original offerings to the community,” Nguyen said. “Over the last six years, we’ve proven that Vietnamese cuisine has a place in the New Orleans culinary realm. We felt it was time to raise the bar on our offerings and prove what the Vietnamese culture can bring to the table.”

Nguyen’s other restaurants include Magasin Kitchen ( 611 O'Keefe Ave.) and Sprout & Press (4525 Freret St.).
