  • The Cheezy Cajun on St. Claude Avenue has closed.

St. Claude Avenue’s The Cheezy Cajun has closed.

The owners announced the shuttering on the restaurant's Facebook page over the weekend, stating that the closure came with a “heavy heart.” The last day of service was Sunday.

Owners and longtime Bywater residents Doug Minich and Michael Ducote opened
the restaurant and meat market in late 2015, serving whimsical dishes with Cajun influence and a heavy dose of Wisconsin cheese. The spot was one of several butcher shop-restaurant hybrids to open in the city at the time, including Shank Charcuterie, also on St. Claude Avenue, and Bourree on South Carrollton Avenue.

What caused the shutter was not immediately clear, but it comes during a particularly rough summer for restaurants. The owners of nearby Cafe Henri announced last week they would close, and Bywater restaurant Oxalis called it quits in May.

The full statement from The Cheezy Cajun:

"It's with a heavy heart that We are announcing the close of The Cheezy Cajun. We did our best and enjoyed the ride but things that we couldn't control have interfered. I would like to thank everyone that has supported us and we are equally happy with the people we met and the new friends we made. We will be here tomorrow till 4 brunch so come and give us a kiss and a hug."
